Portland intensifies recruiting of women, minorities
Officials in Portland, Maine are stepping up efforts to recruit diverse candidates after criticism that the city isn't doing enough to recruit women and minority job candidates for city job openings.


Diversity sought in health care field
According to the California Wellness Foundation, Latinos represent 32 percent of the state's population, though only 4 percent of the state's doctors and registered nurses are Latino. To help address this disparity, the Wellness Foundation has announced a $1 million grant intended to increase diversity in state healthcare providers.


Springfield, IL seeks minority recruiter
Mayor Tim Davlin announced the city is searching for a minority recruiter whose job will be to boost the number of non-whites and women in the police and fire departments. Applications for the newly created "Coordinator of African American, Female and Minority Recruitment" will be accepted through March 3.


Diversity at the top level often gets just lip service
Despite the fact that diversity creates teams that are often more efficient and innovative, the highest levels of corporate America remain overwhelmingly white and male, and the term diversity is more buzzword than business practice.

Eager to enter the red-hot Hispanic sector of the media market, entertainment conglomerates such as News Corp., CBS Corp. and Walt Disney Co. are said to be possible contenders should Spanish-language broadcaster Univision Communications go on the auction block.

He is on Forbes magazine's list of the richest Americans, TIME magazine ranked him as one of the 25 most influential Hispanics in the U.S. and Hispanic Business magazine listed his business, The Related Group of Florida, as the largest Hispanic-owned company in the country. Jorge Perez is a real estate mogul and a true Latino leader.

  • Emilio Gonzalez, Ph.D., was sworn in on January 4, 2006 as the Director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS), an Under Secretary position within the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Diego Ruiz, former Vice President & General Manager of Univision Television Group's television stations serving north California, has been appointed to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as Deputy Chief, Strategic Planning and Policy Analysis.
  • Francisco Codina, has been named Group Vice President of North America Marketing, Sales and Service for Ford Motor Company.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Oscar Arias, a former president, was tied with Otton Solis in a race that could decide the fate of the trade accord between the United States and Central America known as CAFTA. It could take more than a week before a winner is declared.


Brazil May Ask Venezuela to Pay Half of Proposed Gas Pipeline
Brazil's government may ask Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to finance at least half of a proposed $20 billion Amazon gas pipeline to ensure he isn't tempted to raise prices or cut supplies, a Brazilian oil company executive said.


Colombia gunmen free MSF workers
Two staff members of the medical aid agency Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) detained by gunmen in Colombia have been freed, says the organization. The two workers were exploring ways of expanding the health services in the Norte de Santander province when they were detained.
